The foreshore is the area on land between high and low tide. Morphodynamics of an anthropogenically altered dual-inlet system: John's Pass and Blind Pass, west-central Florida, USA. Many have questioned the wisdom of choosing to build on and develop barrier islands, given their risks. The shoreface is the part of the barrier where the ocean meets the shore of the island. The same currents that formed these barrier islands can also destroy or erode them. Unlike stationary landforms, barrier islands build up, erode, migrate and rebuild over time in response to waves, tides, currents and other physical processes in the open ocean environment. On many barrier islands that are only slowly eroding, landward dunes and associated landforms tend to have more diverse and richer plant communities than areas regularly overwashed (Roman and Nordstrom, 1988). The long-term survival of barrier islands, as well as barrier beaches, is dependent on maintenance of their dune systems, for these store sand and replace that lost during storms. Sections of the island with greater widths experienced washover deposits that did not reach the bayshore, and the island narrowed by ocean shoreline recession until it reached the critical width.
